What is Single Payer?
  •  Single payer financed health care is a system funded similar to your local police and fire departments.

  •  Single payer is a health insurance system that collects all medical fees and pays for all services through a single government-related agency, to reimburse your privately run health care providers.

  •  Single payer gives you complete freedom to choose your doctor and hospital and removes the corporate bureaucracy that can deny you care.

The United States, Canada and Australia have single payer health care insurance programs named Medicare.
What are the benefits?
  •  Universal coverage—everybody in, nobody out.

  •  No co-pays, deductibles, or caps.  No denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. Coverage includes dental, eye care & long-term care.

  • Better bargaining ability--to negotiate volume discounts for pharmaceuticals and medical equipment

  • Greater Mobility—coverage remains from job to job, or if you lose your job.

  • Financial Security—62% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills, 75% of those had health insurance (Ohio University research)

  • Saves lives—an estimated 45,000 people die each year due to lack of health insurance (Harvard-based 2009 study in the American Journal of Public Health)

  • Fiscally responsible-A savings of $400 billion annually will result by eliminating insurance companies’ “administrative costs” (Congressional Budget Office)

  • Economically beneficial-Allows American businesses to be more competitive with businesses from other countries who already have a single payer system.

  • Doctors spend less on bookkeeping with a uniform billing system.

  • Countries that use a single payer system cover all their citizens for half of what we spend, yet we have 50 million uninsured and another 50 million underinsured  (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development health database)

  • Most important, a single payer health care system makes a statement about who we are as a country by how we treat each other.
